China's injection molding machine output accounts for two-thirds of the world
After more than 50 years of development, China's plastics machinery industry has evolved from scratch, growing from small to large, and from being unknown to becoming a globally recognized force. Among all the categories of plastic machinery, injection molding machines stand out as the largest segment. The progress made in this field has drawn widespread recognition from the global plastics machinery community. Today, the development of injection molding machines in China showcases seven remarkable features:
First, injection molding machines contribute significantly to the overall output value of the plastics industry. Among the three major types of plastics machinery—molding machines, extruders, and blow molding machines—molding machines account for over 50% of the total value, making them the most important category. This highlights their central role in China’s plastics sector.
Second, China leads the world in the annual production of injection molding machines. In 2006, the global annual output reached 91,480 units, with China producing 57,600 units—nearly 63% of the world's total. Ningbo alone produces about one-third of the world’s injection molding machines, solidifying its position as the largest production hub for these machines globally.
Third, China ranks third in the world in terms of the total output value of injection molding machines, leading in Europe and ranking second in Japan. This reflects the country’s strong industrial foundation and market influence.
Fourth, injection molding machines are the top exported product within China’s plastics machinery industry. In 2006, they accounted for 54% of the total exports of plastic machinery, playing a crucial role in boosting China’s presence in the international market.
Fifth, the growth rate of the injection molding machine industry is unmatched within the broader plastics machinery sector. Since the new century, the average annual growth rate of China’s press industry has exceeded 20%, with injection molding machines consistently outpacing other segments in development speed.
Sixth, the technological gap between China’s injection molding machines and those of developed countries is the smallest among all machinery categories. Thanks to accelerated scientific innovation and improved independent R&D capabilities, most Chinese injection molding machines now match the standards of the late 1980s, while some products have reached levels comparable to the 1990s. A few even lead internationally.
Lastly, the injection molding machine industry achieved a historic breakthrough by winning the "zero" milestone in China's famous brand products. On September 11, 2007, China’s plastics machinery industry secured its first "China Top Branded Product" awards, with three of the honors going to injection molding machine products. This marked a significant step toward building a strong domestic brand in the global plastics industry.
