Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

Two Chicago firefighters were hospitalized after falling two stories through a hole in the third floor of an apartment building near Monroe Street and Albany Avenue. The incident occurred during a fire that spread from the main building to a nearby 1½-story structure on Sunday evening.

A mayday call was issued around 8:45 p.m. Saturday after the two firefighters fell all the way to the first floor. One managed to escape on his own, while the other was assisted by colleagues and taken to the hospital. Both were reported in serious-to-critical condition upon arrival but were alert and speaking later that night. They were expected to remain under observation for further evaluation.

Over 100 firefighters and medics responded to the scene. It was noted that the building did not have any working smoke detectors. Although no one was found living on the second or third floors, there were occupants on the first level. The fire posed a significant challenge due to its intensity and the structural risks involved.

This from Chi-Town Fire Photos:

Sunday night, the MFAO dispatched units to a working fire at 3104 W. Monroe Street. Upon arrival, Battalion 18 reported a three-story brick building with heavy fire on the first, second, and third floors, as well as an exposure risk. A still and box were requested shortly after. Fire companies deployed six or more hand lines and had two truck companies working on the roof. For a brief period, heavy flames were visible through the roof and top floor.

While fighting the fire, multiple firefighters fell through a hole in the floor, triggering a Mayday alert and the activation of the RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). One of the injured was reportedly rescued from the rear of the building. Fortunately, the injuries sustained were not life-threatening. These photos were taken approximately 10 minutes into the fire response.

The images captured the intensity of the blaze and the efforts of the responding crews. From the smoldering remains of the third-floor apartment to the towering fire trucks and ladder operations, the scenes reflect the dangerous and chaotic nature of the incident. Despite the challenges, the firefighters showed remarkable resilience and teamwork in containing the fire and ensuring the safety of those involved.
