In November, we shared an update about the Lake Zurich Fire Department's plan to sell their Pierce aerial ladder truck. Since then, local media outlets such as the *Journal Topics* and the *Daily Herald* have reported on the Des Plaines Fire Department’s interest in acquiring the equipment.
According to a *Journal Topics* article published last Thursday, the Des Plaines City Council’s public safety committee is set to review the potential purchase of a used ladder truck from Lake Zurich. This could provide a more cost-effective alternative to buying a new unit. The current ladder truck, a 23-year-old Simon LTI model, is in poor condition and no longer supported by the manufacturer. As a result, replacement parts must be custom-made, leading to high costs and delays.
Alderman Walsten highlighted the need for a replacement, stating that the existing truck is beyond its useful life. Fire Chief Alan Wax confirmed this, noting that the vehicle will soon need to be taken out of service. A $1.4 million allocation was included in the 2013 budget for a new ladder truck, but the decision has been delayed while officials evaluate whether two ladder trucks are necessary. Even if only one is kept in service, a backup is essential, according to Walsten.
When he learned about the availability of the Lake Zurich truck, Walsten expressed excitement. The 2000 Pierce model has only 66,000 miles on it and was reportedly in excellent condition after a consultant’s inspection. He estimated the total cost—covering the truck, additional equipment, and potential savings from scrapping the old unit—to be under $390,000. This would save taxpayers approximately $1 million, a significant amount for the city.
The *Daily Herald* also covered the story, noting that the city council is considering a $400,000 purchase of the used aerial ladder truck from Lake Zurich. The fire department currently operates two ladder trucks to serve different parts of town, separated by railroad tracks. With 32 at-grade crossings and frequent train traffic, having two units is crucial for timely emergency responses.
While the Lake Zurich truck is 12 years old, it has low mileage due to limited use and is in very good condition. However, its appraised value is only $10,000, making it unlikely that any department would buy it in its current state. The city is still evaluating whether two ladder trucks are necessary, with a study pending on the matter.
This deal could offer a practical and cost-effective solution for Des Plaines, allowing them to upgrade their fleet without the high expense of a brand-new unit. The full *Journal Topics* article can be read [here](#), and the *Daily Herald* piece is available [here](#).
