Elmhurst firefighters were called to a single-vehicle accident on the northbound ramp of Route 83 heading east toward I-290 this morning. Upon arrival, they found a tractor-trailer that had rolled onto its side, trapping the driver inside the cab. The trailer had hit a streetlight during the rollover, causing it to buckle and spill part of its cargo—plastic pellets—onto the road. Multiple Elmhurst fire units responded, including two ambulance units, a battalion chief, an engine company, a tower ladder, and the heavy rescue team. The extraction process took over 45 minutes, and due to the severity of the situation, the incident commander requested a medivac. Lifestar Chicago, formerly known as Loyola Lifestar, arrived after the driver was freed and transported the patient to a hospital.
Larry Shapiro, who was nearby, captured several photos from the scene. One image shows the Lifestar helicopter landing on the northbound lanes of Route 83 just south of the Eisenhower Expressway, preparing to pick up the injured driver. Another photo highlights the efforts of Elmhurst firefighters as they worked to free the trapped driver from the overturned truck. A third image shows the driver being transferred from an ambulance to Lifestar personnel for transport. Firefighters used a steel cable from their squad’s front-end winch along with jacks to stabilize the truck during the rescue. After the operation, equipment was packed up, and the damaged truck was left in place, with the trailer split open and debris scattered across the grass. A final photo captures the Lifestar helicopter lifting off, with a Bensenville Fire Department engine standing by to secure the area. More images from the scene are available in a gallery.
