On Thursday evening around 7 p.m., the Evanston Fire Department received multiple calls about smoke in the area of Callan Avenue and Howard Street. As more reports came in describing heavy fire on Callan Avenue, specifically in the 100 block, with people trapped inside, dispatchers escalated the alarm to a Code 4. Evanston Engine 22 was the first unit to arrive at the three-story brick building with a courtyard. Upon arrival, they found significant fire engulfing the rear porches from the ground floor all the way to the top. The officer immediately upgraded the alarm to a MABAS Box Alarm to bring in additional resources.
Several images captured the intensity of the situation. One photo shows the initial arrival of firefighters at the scene, while another depicts the porches darkening quickly as water was applied. A third image highlights how white smoke replaced the flames as crews worked to contain the blaze.
Despite thorough searches for trapped occupants, no one was found inside. However, the fire had already spread to second and third-floor units before it was brought under control. According to an article from Evanston Now, 16 residents were left temporarily homeless after the fire broke out at 116 Callan Ave. Fire Chief Greg Klaiber noted that the first arriving units found flames coming from the second and third floor balconies at the rear of the building. A mutual aid box alarm was triggered, bringing in all local fire units and a ladder truck from Skokie.
All five apartment residents managed to escape on their own, though the fire caused extensive damage. An elderly woman was treated on-site for shortness of breath but was not transported. No firefighters were injured, and the fire was fully extinguished by around 8 p.m. The cause is still under investigation.
Tim Olk arrived shortly after the fire was knocked down and shared several photos capturing the aftermath. His images show Engine 21 positioned in the alley behind the building, Engine 22 taking the front, and the extent of the damage reaching the top of the structure. Another shot highlights the U-shaped design of the building with a courtyard on Callan Avenue. Firefighters were seen working on the roof and using water to cool off after the intense effort. Damage was particularly severe at the base of the porches, where storage appeared to be located.
