Several news outlets have reported on the tragic incident involving a devastating fire in Houston, Texas, which resulted in the deaths of four firefighters and left several others injured.

ABC News:

Four firefighters lost their lives and thirteen were hospitalized after battling a five-alarm fire that engulfed a motel in Houston. The blaze, which occurred on one of the city's busiest expressways, quickly spread and caused the roof of the Southwest Inn to collapse, according to KTRK.

"We can confirm for you, at this time, we have four fatalities," said Janice Evans, a spokesperson for the Houston Mayor’s Office. "Families are being notified, and it’s a very sad day for the Houston Fire Department and the city as a whole."

Three of the firefighters died at the scene, while the fourth succumbed to injuries at a hospital. One of the deceased was a female firefighter, making her the second woman to die in the line of duty in Houston's history. At least six others were injured, with some in critical condition.

This tragedy marks the deadliest incident in the history of the Houston Fire Department, as reported by The Associated Press. Jeff Caynon, president of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association, expressed deep sorrow: "Houston firefighters mourn the loss of our three brothers and our sister and will forever honor their sacrifices."

CNN News:

Four Houston firefighters died when a hotel wall collapsed during a major fire on Friday, according to the mayor of the city. “Today is going to go down as the worst day in the history of the Houston Fire Department,” said Mayor Annise Parker.

Thirteen other firefighters were treated in local hospitals, with one in critical condition. Fire Capt. Ruy Lozano stated that over 150 firefighters responded to the five-alarm blaze, which started at a restaurant adjacent to the Southwest Inn near Interstate 69.

Some firefighters entered the building believing there were civilians inside, but the structure collapsed, trapping them. “Unfortunately, the building had much more fire than we originally thought,” said Lozano. “The structure collapsed, and our members who were trying to save lives were trapped.”

Fellow firefighters rushed to rescue their colleagues, and Garrison noted that the death toll could have been higher without their bravery. The fallen firefighters include Matthew Renaud, Robert Bebee, Robert Garner, and Anne Sullivan, a 24-year-old who recently graduated from the Houston Fire Department Academy.

FOX News:

Four Houston firefighters died while responding to a massive five-alarm fire at a motel, according to a city official. Three of the victims died at the scene, and the fourth passed away in the hospital. Six others were injured, with one in critical condition.

Over 100 firefighters worked in extreme heat to contain the fire, which began at a restaurant and club at the Southwest Inn on U.S. 59, a heavily traveled highway. Flames spread quickly, and the roof remained burning for over an hour.

Jeff Caynon of the Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association confirmed that firefighters were injured due to a roof collapse. “The roof collapsed,” he said. “I don’t know if that was folks outside next to the structure or inside when it collapsed, but the collapse is going to be the cause.”

Houston Fire Chief Terry Garrison explained that the four firefighters were searching for people they believed were still trapped in the building. “They took the highest amount of risk possible,” he said. “They were trying to save lives and were lost in the process.”
