The reporter obtained information from a recent market survey conducted by Sinopec, which revealed that sales of premium gasoline grades—such as No. 93, No. 97, and No. 98—have gradually overtaken those of No. 90 gasoline in Guangdong since last September. These high-grade fuels have now become the dominant choice in retail gasoline sales. Previously, No. 90 accounted for over 50% of total gasoline sales, but it has now dropped to 34%, while premium gasoline now holds 66% of the market share.
However, Yao Daming, an official from the Guangdong Oil and Gas Merchants Association, expressed some disagreement with this data. He explained that the two major state-owned oil companies are gradually phasing out the production of No. 90 gasoline. Since last year, the supply of No. 90 has significantly declined, but he emphasized that this is not due to market rejection. Instead, it reflects a strategic shift. Sinopec officials, on the other hand, confirmed that reducing the production of lower-grade gasoline is part of a broader industry trend.
**Rising Demand for High-Grade Gasoline**
According to a survey conducted by Maoming Petrochemical, one of Guangdong’s largest refineries, urban households in the province own an average of 9.3 vehicles per 100 families—an increase of 35% compared to the previous year. Additionally, per capita fuel expenses have risen by 40%. In the Pearl River Delta region, 100 households in towns own approximately 20 cars. The growing popularity of personal vehicles has led to increased demand for gasoline above No. 93.
Moreover, stricter emission regulations and enhanced vehicle inspection policies in recent years have further boosted the demand for cleaner, higher-quality gasoline. The survey also found that vehicles with higher performance requirements tend to consume better quality fuel.
Notably, there has been no significant price inversion for No. 90 gasoline. According to experts from the Guangdong Oil and Gas Merchants Association, even at current high international oil prices, selling No. 90 gasoline remains profitable domestically. Despite this, its supply continues to be reduced, indicating that the major oil companies are actively controlling its production.
**Consumers Prefer No. 90 for Its Affordability**
In fact, China's top oil companies have been pushing for the elimination of low-grade gasoline in recent years. A recent survey by the reporter at gas stations across Guangzhou showed that No. 90 gasoline is now supplied much less frequently. Major stations from Sinopec, PetroChina, and BP all stated that overall gasoline supply remains stable, but the availability of low-grade options is inconsistent.
For example, a foreign oil station on Guangzhou Avenue previously sold No. 90 gasoline, but supply has significantly decreased since the second half of last year.
On the consumer side, opinions differ. Many car owners still prefer No. 90 gasoline, especially for regular family vehicles. They find it more affordable and sufficient for their needs, unless they drive high-end models that require premium fuel.
