The Chicago Tribune recently published an article detailing a new agreement for firefighters in Downers Grove, which includes salary increases over the next three years. The village council approved the contract on August 5 with a vote of 5-1, marking a significant step forward for the local fire department. According to the terms, firefighters will see base pay raises of 3% this year, followed by 2% in 2015 and 1% in 2016. These increases apply uniformly across all experience levels. For instance, a starting firefighter/paramedic will now earn $65,701, up from $63,787 last year. By 2016, that figure is expected to rise to $67,685. However, as employees gain more experience, their actual raises can be much higher—up to 7.8% for those with two years of service. The union, representing 70 full-time members including paramedics, engineers, lieutenants, captains, and the director of emergency medical services, overwhelmingly ratified the deal on July 24. Union President Rob Pekelder praised the agreement, noting it was supported by a large majority of members. Additionally, firefighters who reach the top of their salary ranges will be eligible for one-time bonuses ranging from $750 to $1,500 during the contract’s term, depending on their experience level. The contract also includes a provision prohibiting any form of strike or union participation in labor actions. Not everyone was pleased with the agreement. Commissioner Bob Barnett, who voted against the contract, voiced concerns about long-term financial commitments. “Once again, we’ve put into our contract conditions that commit our residents to pay for pay increases with no recourse if the economy tanks,” he said. “Essentially, our only way out would be to fire people.” The contract was backdated to May, meaning firefighters will receive the 3% raise they were owed over the past three months in a lump sum soon. Future raises will take effect each May. Fire Chief Baker confirmed that the payments will be processed accordingly, ensuring that all members are compensated fairly. Thanks, Dan.
