In certain industrial applications, standard bearings simply don’t meet the precision requirements. That’s where extra precision bearings come into play. These specialized components are designed to offer extremely tight tolerances and superior accuracy, making them ideal for high-speed operations and applications that demand precise motion control. There are two main types of extra precision bearings: deep groove bearings and angular contact bearings.
Deep groove bearings feature full shoulders on both the inner and outer raceways, which makes it easy to add seals or shields. They can handle radial loads, thrust loads, or a combination of both. Available in a wide range of sizes—including miniature precision bearings—these bearings are also offered with various cage designs. Their versatility makes them one of the most commonly used bearing types across many industries.
Angular contact bearings, on the other hand, have a complete shoulder on one ring and a partial or no shoulder on the other. This design allows for larger balls, which increases load capacity and speed performance. They are often used in high-speed applications and come with different cage options to optimize performance. Angular contact bearings can support thrust loads or a mix of radial and thrust loads but cannot handle radial loads alone. When mounted back-to-back or face-to-face, they can manage thrust loads in both directions.
These bearings are available in separable or non-separable configurations. Separable bearings are especially useful in blind hole installations or when press fits are required, offering greater flexibility during assembly.
Closures like shields and seals help protect the internal components of bearings from contamination and ensure proper lubrication retention. Shields are typically installed on the inner ring and offer better speed performance with lower torque, while seals are placed on the outer ring and provide stronger protection at the cost of reduced speed and increased heat generation.
Bearing cages help maintain ball spacing, reduce friction, and minimize heat buildup. For extra precision bearings, materials such as stainless steel, bronze, or phenolic are often used instead of stamped steel, allowing for higher speeds and better performance under heavy loads. Cages can be tailored to meet specific needs, including low-torque, high-speed, or noise-reduction requirements.
All precision ball bearings must adhere to ABEC standards, which define the acceptable tolerances for critical dimensions. These standards, aligned with ISO guidelines, ensure consistency and quality across the industry. ABEC ratings range from 1 to 7, with higher numbers indicating tighter tolerances and improved performance. While ABEC 5–7 bearings are used in high-precision applications, it's important to choose the right rating based on actual needs, as higher-rated bearings can be significantly more expensive.
To ensure optimal performance, users should pay attention to factors like radial internal clearance and preloading. Proper clearance prevents seizing due to thermal expansion, while preloading enhances rigidity by eliminating internal play. Duplex bearings, which are paired and preloaded during installation, are an efficient solution for applications requiring high rigidity and bidirectional load support.
Shaft and housing fit selection is also crucial. Looser fits may be necessary for applications involving thermal expansion or axial movement, while tighter fits are preferred for heavy radial loads or vibration control. Lubrication choice—grease or oil—also depends on operating conditions. Grease is the standard option, but oil is better suited for high-speed applications due to its cooling properties and lower torque.
