The fire department in Bedford Park is currently working on a historic restoration project involving their 1959 Pitman Snorkel, the very first unit ever built by the company. This unique piece of firefighting history was originally designed for the Chicago Fire Department but was rejected due to its long wheelbase and tandem axle, making it difficult to maneuver in urban areas. The Bedford Park Fire Department (BPFD) stepped in and purchased the unit, which they later named Snorkel 5.
Now, after decades of being stored in the public works yard, the vehicle has been brought back to Station 1 for a complete overhaul. The mechanical systems are being handled in-house by the department’s own technicians, with plans to send the body to Automotive Mentoring Group (AMG) for refinishing once the mechanical work is done. The project is supported by the BPFD Foreign Fire Board and the Village of Bedford Park.
A recent visit to the station revealed the ongoing efforts to restore this iconic machine. It's clear that the team is putting a lot of love and care into the process, ensuring that this historical asset is preserved for future generations. The unit, a 1959 GMC chassis with a V8 engine and manual transmission, was once used by the street light division before being left unused for over 20 years.
Photos from the restoration show the progress being made, as well as some rare images of the unit in its original condition. One photo even shows a vintage magazine ad for the first Pitman Snorkel, highlighting its significance in fire service history. Another image captures the unit during its time in the public works yard, reminding us of how far it has come.
This project is not just about restoring a vehicle—it's about honoring the past and preserving an important part of local history. The community is watching closely, excited to see the finished product and proud of the effort being put into this meaningful restoration.
