What’s New in Autodesk PowerMill and Autodesk FeatureCAM 2018

By Clinton Perry and Sanjay Thakore It's that time of year again — the 2018 versions of PowerMill and FeatureCAM are officially out! Over the next few weeks, we'll be sharing a wealth of information, videos, and updates on our product pages. But before that, we wanted to give you a quick overview of the most exciting new features in this release. This year, our focus was on enhancing the user experience, and we've added several improvements that we believe will make your workflow more efficient and enjoyable. One of the biggest changes in both PowerMill and FeatureCAM 2018 is the introduction of a ribbon-style user interface. This design has been in development since Autodesk acquired Delcam in 2014, and it's designed to make navigation more intuitive. While all the essential tools remain easily accessible, the new layout organizes functions into logical groups, with the most commonly used commands right at your fingertips. This makes it easier for both new and experienced users to get up to speed quickly.
New Ribbon-style Interface
In addition to the updated UI, PowerMill 2018 brings several key enhancements: - **Dynamic machine control**: Users can now interactively adjust 5-axis toolpaths using a virtual machine twin, allowing for localized edits and better control over CNC motion, which ultimately saves programming time. - **Improved stock simulation**: The new high-quality simulation allows for zooming, panning, and rotating, giving users greater confidence that their parts will be machined exactly as intended. - **Enhanced turning capabilities**: New features like collision checking, editable toolpaths, and more lead and link options provide more flexibility and control during the machining process. - **Simplified 2D strategies**: These updates help reduce the time required to program 2D parts and minimize the need for multiple CAM systems. FeatureCAM 2018 also sees major improvements, especially with its redesigned ribbon interface. This not only improves the visual appeal but also makes it easier for users to access frequently used tools. With icons, text labels, and dynamic help, the software becomes more approachable and powerful. Plus, the ribbon is fully customizable, so you can tailor your workspace to fit your unique needs. Beyond the interface, there are some impressive functional updates too: - **Automatic toolpath angle**: Users can now automatically adjust the angle of parallel finishing toolpaths based on the area being machined, leading to more efficient toolpaths across multiple surfaces. - **Automatic 3+2 positioning**: This feature helps users determine whether the machine axes should be in a standard or alternate position, ensuring that the program stays within the machine’s working envelope. PartMaker, a specialized module within FeatureCAM, has also received a major update. As a production-focused CAM solution for Swiss-type lathes, PartMaker 2018 now includes: - **Laser machining support**: This feature allows users to program and simulate Swiss machines with integrated laser cutting capabilities, including control over pulse width, frequency, gas, and power settings. - **Keyway broaching**: A highly efficient method for high-volume production, this update lets users define the index position of the stock and choose the number of cuts. - **Workflow improvements**: A new 3D view in setup sheets enhances visualization, and toolpath verification now supports pausing, rewinding, and displaying the tool shank. You can also undock windows for use on a second monitor. We're really excited about what we've delivered in 2018 and can't wait to see how our users leverage these new features. A big thank you from our entire team — be sure to visit the PowerMill and FeatureCAM product pages to explore all the details of this year’s updates!
