It’s that time of year again — the 2018 versions of PowerMill and FeatureCAM are officially out! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing a wealth of details, videos, and updates on our product center. But before that, we wanted to give you a quick overview of what’s new and exciting in this release. This year, our focus was on improving the user experience, and we’ve added several enhancements that we believe will make your workflow faster and more intuitive.
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a ribbon-style user interface. This design has been in development since Autodesk acquired Delcam back in 2014. While all the essential tools are still easily accessible, the 2018 versions organize features into logical groups, with the most commonly used functions right at your fingertips. The new layout not only looks cleaner but also helps reduce the learning curve, making it easier for both new and experienced users to navigate.

In addition to the updated UI, PowerMill 2018 brings several customer-driven improvements:
- **Dynamic Machine Control**: This feature lets users adjust 5-axis toolpaths in real-time using a virtual machine twin. It allows for localized edits, giving better control over CNC motion and reducing programming time.
- **Enhanced Stock Simulation**: The simulation now offers higher quality visuals that can be zoomed, panned, and rotated, helping you verify your programs with greater confidence.
- **Improved Turning Capabilities**: New options for collision checking, editable toolpaths, and a wider range of leads and links offer more flexibility and control during turning operations.
- **Simplified 2D Strategies**: These new strategies make it easier to program prismatic pockets and bosses, reducing the need for multiple CAM programs and saving time.
FeatureCAM 2018 also received a major overhaul, including the same ribbon-style interface. This change not only improves the look and feel of the software but also makes it easier to access frequently used tools. With icons, text, and dynamic help, users can quickly find what they need. Plus, the ribbon is fully customizable, so you can tailor the workspace to fit your specific workflow.
Beyond the UI, there are some really useful functional updates too:
- **Automatic Toolpath Angle**: Users can now fine-tune the angle of parallel finishing toolpaths based on the area being machined, resulting in more efficient toolpaths across multiple surfaces.
- **Automatic 3+2 Positioning**: This feature helps users quickly determine if the machine axes should be in a standard or alternate position, ensuring the program stays within the machine’s working envelope.
PartMaker, which is integrated into FeatureCAM, also saw a major update. PartMaker is designed for high-precision manufacturing on Swiss-type lathes. The 2018 version includes:
- **Laser Machining**: A highly anticipated feature, allowing users to program and simulate Swiss machines with laser cutting capabilities, including control over pulse width, frequency, and power levels.
- **Keyway Broaching**: A great option for high-volume production, this feature lets users set the stock index position and choose the number of cuts needed.
- **Workflow Enhancements**: A new 3D view in setup sheets improves visualization, and toolpath verification now supports pausing, rewinding, and displaying the tool shank. You can also undock windows for use on a second monitor.
