I just got back from covering this box alarm structure fire in Crystal Lake, Illinois. It was a pretty intense scene when I arrived around 10 PM last night. The call came in just after 9 PM, and by the time I got there, flames were already visible on the second floor.
The Crystal Lake Fire Department had multiple units responding, including a Rosenbauer America pumper that looked brand new. The firefighters were working hard to get water on the fire, but it had really taken hold in the upper levels. You could see the smoke rising high into the sky, even from several blocks away.

One thing that struck me was how coordinated the efforts were despite the chaos. The incident commander had everyone organized quickly, setting up a water supply line from a nearby hydrant. They also brought in ladder trucks to access the upper floors where the fire seemed most intense.

It took about two hours for them to bring the flames under control. By then, the entire second floor was heavily damaged, and there was significant water damage throughout the first floor as well. Thankfully, no one was reported injured, though the family who lived there will have a lot of cleanup ahead of them.

As always, these scenes remind me how dangerous firefighting can be, yet how dedicated these men and women are to protecting our communities. The Crystal Lake FD did an excellent job tonight, and I’m grateful they were able to keep things under control before the fire spread further.

This is just another reminder of why we need to support our local fire departments. If you haven’t already, consider donating time or resources to your nearest station. They truly make a difference every single day.
Stay safe out there!
