This just in from the northwest side of Chicago: One of the city's newer Wheeled Coach ambulances, Chicago Fire Department Unit A23, sustained significant damage earlier today after being involved in a collision. The incident occurred while the unit was en route to respond to an EMS Plan 1 call near the intersection of Harlem and Bryn Mawr.
As reported by Dan McInerney, the ambulance collided with an SUV in what appears to have been a minor traffic mishap. Thankfully, no serious injuries were reported for those involved, though the aftermath left the vehicle in need of extensive repairs. Local photographer Greg Reynolds captured the scene shortly after the crash, providing us with these images that highlight the extent of the damage.

The response team wasted no time in clearing the area. An Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) tow truck was dispatched to the scene to move the damaged ambulance away from the busy intersection. By the time the tow truck operator finished securing the vehicle, it was evident that the accident had caused more than just cosmetic damage.

For context, Chicago Fire Department Ambulance 23 is a relatively recent addition to the fleet, having been built in 2014 as part of the Wheeled Coach series. It's powered by a Ford E-450 chassis and features the standard Type III configuration used by many urban fire departments across the country. This particular unit has been a reliable responder since joining the ranks but will likely require a trip back to the shop for a thorough inspection and repair work.

While details remain sparse regarding the cause of the crash, witnesses say both drivers appeared cooperative during the investigation. Regardless of the circumstances, incidents like this serve as reminders of the inherent risks faced daily by first responders who put their lives on the line to keep our communities safe. Here's hoping everyone involved makes a full recovery—and that this particular ambulance gets back into service soon.
