Early this morning, firefighters from Arlington Heights, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, and Mount Prospect were called out to 1929 N Spruce Terrace in Arlington Heights at approximately 8:20 AM on Thursday, February 4th, 2021. They responded to reports of a house fire. As they were on their way, dispatch informed them that there might be two people still inside the residence, and neighbors had mentioned that the house had what seemed like hoarding conditions.
When the first responders arrived, Engine 2 confirmed the presence of flames at the back of the house. Shortly after, Palatine Engine 83 set up operations in front of the property. Firefighters immediately went inside to search for any occupants. To everyone’s relief, they found two adults. Both individuals were given medical assistance on-site before being transported to an ambulance.
The fire was brought under control within just 15 minutes. However, despite the quick response, it was later confirmed that neither of the residents pulled from the house survived.
I stood nearby as the firefighters worked tirelessly through the chaos, ensuring every corner of the house was checked thoroughly. It's heartbreaking to hear about such tragic outcomes, especially when situations involve hoarding conditions, which can significantly complicate rescue efforts.
As the smoke cleared, I couldn't help but reflect on the bravery of these firefighters who put their lives on the line daily. Their dedication is truly commendable.
Attached below are some images taken by Larry Shapiro. These photos capture the aftermath of the fire, showing the extent of the damage and the cluttered state of the house.
