This morning, a devastating collision occurred on Route 22 in Long Grove involving a tractor-trailer and a tractor-dump combination. According to reports from the Lake County News Sun, a tragic accident unfolded around 8 a.m. when a 2005 semi-truck traveling eastbound on Route 22 near Krueger Road suddenly veered into the westbound lanes and crashed head-on with a dump truck.
Sgt. Sara Balmes of the Lake County Sheriff's Office described the incident, stating that the driver of the semi attempted to regain control but was unable to avoid the collision. While the dump truck driver swerved in an effort to evade the impact, both vehicles ended up off the main roadway, coming to rest on the shoulder. Tragically, the driver of the semi was severely injured and remained trapped inside the wreckage for approximately half an hour before emergency responders were able to extricate him. He was immediately transported to Advocate Condell Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Meanwhile, the dump truck driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital.
Eyewitness Tim Olk was present at the scene and captured several striking images of the aftermath, providing a visual record of the devastation caused by the crash. The photos reveal the extent of damage to the semi-truck, with its cab nearly obliterated. These harrowing visuals serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced daily on our roads.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with additional information or dashcam footage of the event to come forward. This tragedy underscores the importance of safe driving practices and the potential consequences of even minor lapses in attention while behind the wheel. Let us hope that lessons can be learned from this incident to prevent similar accidents in the future.
