This morning, just before 11 AM, the Park Ridge Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm from a four-story apartment building located at 500 Thames Parkway. As they were en route, they got a phone call reporting an actual fire on the top floor. The alarm was immediately escalated to a working fire, and upon arrival, Battalion 35 observed fire blowing out of the rear unit on the top floor. The building consists of three floors with ten units each. A second alarm was called within minutes of the initial box alarm, and an EMS box alarm was also activated as a precaution due to the number of occupants.
The building lacks a standpipe system, so Park Ridge firefighters brought a 2 1/2-inch high-rise pack into the building, feeding it through a top-floor window to the basket of Tower 36. They managed to enter the fire unit with this line and largely suppressed the fire.
In the rear of the building, DesPlaines Engine 62 was tasked with using their deck gun to extinguish the exterior fire on the mansard roof before establishing a positive water supply. Meanwhile, Morton Grove Engine (Quint) 4 was the first aerial device deployed in the rear and was quickly put to work.
Morton Grove's Squad 4 was supposed to respond but was out of service; they instead came with the quint and were immediately assigned tasks. The fire was confined to the unit of origin, with only minor damage to adjacent apartments.
After the fire was extinguished, lingering hotspots were found in various parts of the mansard roof, requiring further effort to fully address them. A line was stretched up the ladder of Engine 4 to provide water to crews on the roof dealing with residual fire in the mansard roof.
Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro documented the incident and provided numerous photos from the scene. Mutual aid companies such as Norwood Park, Skokie, and Schiller Park also responded to support Park Ridge. Additionally, the MABAS Division 3 'Comm 3' dispatched four chiefs as part of an Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT).
Firefighters worked diligently on the roof to access the mansard parapet and extinguish any remaining fire within. Overhaul efforts continued in the fire unit to ensure all hazards were addressed. This was a coordinated effort involving multiple departments, and thanks to their hard work, the fire was successfully contained with minimal overall impact to the building.
