Just after 10:30 AM today, the Park Ridge Fire Department received an automatic fire alarm at a four-story apartment complex located at 500 Thames Parkway. While en route, they were notified by a phone call reporting smoke on the top floor. The alarm was quickly escalated to a working fire status, and upon arrival, Battalion 35 observed flames erupting from the rear of the top floor unit. The structure consists of three floors, each housing ten units. Within minutes of the initial box alarm, a second alarm was called for, and an EMS box alarm was also activated as a precaution due to the number of residents present.
The building lacks a standpipe system, so Park Ridge crews brought a 2 1/2-inch high-rise pack into the building. This hose was fed up to the basket of Tower 36 via a window on the top floor. Entry was made into the fire unit using this line, and the majority of the fire was successfully suppressed.
In the rear of the building, DesPlaines Engine 62 was deployed to use their deck gun to extinguish the external fire on the mansard roof before a stable water supply could be established. Meanwhile, Morton Grove Engine (Quint) 4 was the first aerial apparatus to arrive and was promptly put to work.
Morton Grove’s Squad 4 was out of service, so they responded with the quint instead. As soon as they arrived, they were assigned tasks to assist in containing the fire. The fire was ultimately confined to the originating unit, with only minor damage extending to adjacent apartments.
After the fire was under control, lingering hotspots were still present on various parts of the mansard roof, requiring further attention. A line was extended up the ladder of Engine 4 to provide water to teams working on the roof to address the remaining fire in the mansard area.
Tim Olk, Steve Redick, and Larry Shapiro captured numerous photos from the scene, offering a comprehensive view of the firefighting efforts. Tim's photo gallery can be found [here](link), Steve’s gallery [here](link), and Larry’s [here](link). Additionally, Steve created a video documenting the incident, which you can watch below:
Firefighters from Norwood Park, Skokie, and Schiller Park provided mutual aid, joining forces with the Park Ridge department. The MABAS Division 3 ‘Comm 3’ also dispatched four chiefs as part of an Incident Management Assistance Team (IMAT) to support the operation.
Inside the fire unit, crews focused on overhaul operations to ensure all remnants of the fire were extinguished and removed. The collaborative effort between multiple departments ensured that the fire was contained efficiently, minimizing potential damage and ensuring resident safety.
