“Get Your Fix” Part 3 of 10: Carrier® 38APS/38APD

Continuing our list of the top ten commercial OEM condenser coils that have faced recurring issues over the past decade. This time, we’re looking at the Carrier® 38APS/38APD series.

Get Your Fix Carrier Gemini Main Image

The Carrier® 38APS/38APD has made it onto our list of condenser coils with frequent service problems. Introduced around 2012, this unit was part of Carrier’s Gemini® Select line, featuring Puron refrigerant (R-410A) and a Novation® microchannel heat exchanger. The company promoted the design as a “robust, cost-effective alternative” to traditional coils. While there may be upfront savings, long-term reliability often takes a hit due to leaks, damage from debris, and repair challenges.

Why did Carrier go with microchannel coils?

Microchannel coils offer lower production costs and a smaller refrigerant footprint, which is great for efficiency and environmental impact. But at what cost? Many users have found that the trade-off comes in the form of durability and serviceability. We believe customers should have a choice—especially when it comes to something as critical as their HVAC system.

It’s time to #changethechannel

Our experience with the Carrier 38APS/38APD was one of the key reasons we started offering microchannel conversions. Our #changethechannel program allows customers to upgrade from all-aluminum fin coils to more durable copper tube, aluminum fin coils. This not only improves reliability but also makes future repairs easier while maintaining OEM efficiency levels.

We can custom-manufacture copper tube coils that fit easily with minimal re-piping. They handle the same cooling capacity as the original microchannel units, though they require about 20–30% more refrigerant and must be charged using sub-cooling. Say goodbye to constant leaks, unreliable repairs, and lengthy downtime.

The smaller units are available in both dual and single refrigeration circuits (025–065), while larger models (070–130) come with dual circuits only.

Getting a quote is easy.

As a leader in custom and OEM replacement coils, Nationwide Coils offers #changethechannel for every make, model, and year of commercial HVAC unit—including these Carrier models:

FORD VVT SOLENOID

Variable valve timing (VVT) solenoid or oil control valve controls the oil flow according to the engine speed and load. VVT solenoid is a vital part of the variable valve timing system.
The Oil Control Valve (OCV) is a a critical part used in every engine that is fitted with variable valve technology (VVT). A single control valve will regulate the supply of oil to a designated VVT hub, to advance or retard the timing by altering the camshaft angle position. Controlled by the ECU, the OCV receives electrical signals, instructing it to adjust the oil flow as required, in accordance to current driving conditions.
