Wednesday afternoon (July 27, 2022), Glenview firefighters responded to a report of a house fire at 1701 Annapolis Drive in The Glen around 3:30 PM. Upon arrival, they found flames engulfing the roof of a two-story, single-family home. Firefighters conducted an immediate primary search inside the residence, which came up negative, and then shifted to a defensive firefighting strategy. This involved deploying multiple handlines as well as elevated master streams from Glenview Truck 14 and Northbrook Tower 12 positioned in the alley.
The fire broke out shortly after heavy storms moved through the area, raising the possibility of a lightning strike being the cause. The house featured a cedar shake roof, which likely contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.
Supporting units at the scene included Northbrook Tower 12, Winnetka Engine 28, Morton Grove Squad 4, Northfield Ambulance 29, and chief officers from the North Maine FPD and Morton Grove. Photographer Larry Shapiro captured several images of the incident, providing a detailed look at the firefighting efforts.
As I write this, crews are still working to fully extinguish the blaze and prevent any rekindling. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the timing with the recent storms suggests weather might have played a role. Residents in the surrounding area are advised to remain cautious due to potential debris or water damage in the vicinity.
The Glenview Fire Department and their partners demonstrated quick response and coordination during this challenging situation. Firefighters from neighboring departments played a crucial role in containing the fire and protecting nearby properties. We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
