**From Joe Speicher, Executive Director, Autodesk Foundation** This month's tragedy in Kathmandu has left many hearts heavy with sorrow. The devastation is immense, but the global reaction has been inspiring. The U.S. government has pledged $10 million, telecom providers are offering free calls to Nepal, and the U.S. Air Force has sent over 100 personnel, including urban rescue teams, to assist. It's heartening to see so many stepping up to help. As the Autodesk Foundation, we're actively seeking ways to contribute. Tech companies are leveraging their strengths to aid relief efforts. Google and Facebook are using their vast user bases to verify the safety of people in Nepal. PayPal, with its massive active user count, is underwriting costs and making it easier to donate through their platform. We think that expertise in design and construction could make the biggest difference in Kathmandu's rebuilding process. That’s why we’re aligning ourselves with organizations like Build Change, which has years of experience helping communities recover after disasters. **The Design Opportunity** Once emergency supplies are distributed, temporary housing is constructed, and debris is cleared, comes the challenging task of restoring the city’s infrastructure, homes, and businesses. This phase often gets overlooked or mishandled, but fortunately, some of our grantees have been working on this for years. Take Build Change, for instance—a Foundation partner and non-profit with over a decade of experience constructing homes and schools in post-disaster zones. They collaborate with local governments to develop seismic-safe building codes and teach local contractors how to build these structures affordably. Just a day after the earthquake, they started forming a Nepal response team. We urge anyone who believes in the power of good design to support them. **How to Help** Many of you want to contribute meaningfully. Here’s what we suggest: 1. **Donate to Build Change**—We think this is the most impactful way to ensure lasting change in Nepal. 2. **Support the Creative Market Community**—For May, nearly 500 Creative Market shops are donating up to 100% of their earnings to Nepal disaster relief. The Autodesk Foundation is matching the first $20,000, with all funds going to All Hands, a non-profit addressing both short-term and long-term community needs. Check out Creative Market’s blog for details. 3. **Spread the Word via Pixlr**—Pixlr is donating $20,000 to Build Change this month, thanks to the Autodesk Foundation. Their early May photo challenge encouraged users to share images related to “Message for Nepal.” Head to the Pixlr blog for more info. At Autodesk, we’re committed to aiding Nepal’s rebuilding efforts. From collaborating with partners like Build Change to organizing employee volunteer events, we aim to create a significant, enduring impact. While natural disasters will continue to occur, making the future safer for everyone is something we all share responsibility for.
