Autodesk, a leading software company listed on NASDAQ under the ticker ADSK, has taken a significant step toward open collaboration by making its 2014 Media & Entertainment (M&E) support and learning resources available under Creative Commons (CC) licensing. This initiative includes 20,000 pages of documentation, 70 instructional videos, and 140 downloadable 3D asset files—offering a wealth of content for creators, students, and professionals alike.
Cathy Casserly, CEO of Creative Commons, praised the move, stating, “Autodesk’s adoption of Creative Commons is not just a win for the organization, but more importantly, it’s a powerful boost for the global design community. The Internet thrives on sharing and building upon others’ work, and CC licenses make that possible without legal barriers. By opening up its resources, Autodesk is showing it truly values creativity and collaboration.â€
The initiative was inspired by a request from Paul Duguay, an instructor at Collège Communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick in Canada. After discovering useful training videos on the Autodesk 3ds Max Learning Channel, Duguay wanted to translate them into French and share them with his students and the broader French-speaking 3ds Max community. However, traditional copyright restrictions made this difficult. With the new CC framework, Autodesk can now support such efforts, enabling free sharing and adaptation of content across the globe.
Chris Bradshaw, Senior Vice President at Autodesk, emphasized the importance of open knowledge sharing: “We live in a digital world where people are eager to collaborate, learn, and mentor each other. Through Creative Commons, we’re providing a simple and effective way for users worldwide to share and build upon our resources. I’m excited to see what artists and educators will do next—whether it’s a Finnish translation of Maya features or a school in Bangladesh teaching 3D animation, the possibilities are endless.â€
In addition to the M&E content, Autodesk plans to expand CC licensing to other product help materials, the Knowledge Base, Discussion Forums, and all past and future training content from Autodesk University. Once released under CC, these resources can be freely modified, remixed, and shared globally.
Earlier this year, Autodesk joined Creative Commons as an Innovator-level supporter, aligning itself with major companies like Google and eBay, as well as numerous foundations and individual contributors. This partnership supports Autodesk’s broader mission to empower students and professionals in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.
