Saturday night turned into a harrowing experience for a family in St. Charles when their townhome became engulfed in flames. The incident occurred around 11:45 PM in the 1700 block of Cumberland Green Drive, as confirmed by Fire Chief Joe Schelstreet. Two men were trapped inside—one was an elderly gentleman confined to a wheelchair, and the other was his son, desperately seeking help from the second-floor balcony.
The firefighters from St. Charles quickly sprang into action upon arrival. Chief Schelstreet recounted that they used a portable ladder to reach the trapped individuals. "One of our firefighters climbed up to the balcony, picked up the father, and safely guided him down the ladder," he explained. Following this, they helped the son exit the unit without further incident. Assistance came from neighboring departments including Geneva, Batavia, West Chicago, and South Elgin, making this a true community effort.
According to John Tulipano’s detailed account, the first engine on the scene, Engine 102, identified the fire's intensity and the critical situation involving multiple occupants. Within minutes, they managed to rescue both individuals. The first victim, the elderly man, was discovered in a wheelchair inside a bedroom on the first floor. The second victim was hanging precariously from the second-floor balcony. Thanks to the swift actions of the firefighters, the blaze was contained efficiently, preventing it from spreading to adjacent units.
The aftermath of the fire left significant damage, but thankfully no life-threatening injuries were reported. One individual was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation, while the other received treatment at the scene. The photographs taken by John Tulipano capture the intensity of the situation—the charred remains of the structure, the presence of fire trucks, and the firefighters in full gear ready to act.
This event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of having working smoke detectors and emergency plans in place. It also highlights the bravery and dedication of local firefighters who risk their lives daily to protect others. As residents continue to recover, gratitude toward the first responders runs deep.
