Dear Editor,
With the November 4, 2014 referendum fast approaching, the newly established Fox River & Countryside Fire/Rescue District has been busy justifying their fire district in various media outlets. One of their recent communications mentioned that "change tends to bring out strong emotions." They’re absolutely right—change can be deeply emotional, particularly when it impacts your tax dollars.
Our Kane County Board representative, Drew Frasz, expressed his concerns in a Letter to the Editor, stating, “Many governmental bodies have faced financial challenges in recent years, but hostile takeovers of areas that have been effectively managed by financially responsible organizations are not something I support.†We wholeheartedly concur.
Fox River is attempting to acquire additional properties to cover their $4.4 million debt and keep operations running smoothly. At its core, this issue revolves around finances rather than public safety. If it were truly about enhancing safety, they wouldn't have consistently opposed the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District's efforts to build a station in Lily Lake—a move aimed at improving service for the area. Moreover, if public safety were their priority, they would not have obstructed the villages of Elburn and Lily Lake from expressing their opposition to the disconnection or supporting the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District, which has safeguarded local residents for over 132 years.
Are you prepared to assume responsibility for Fox River’s $4.4 million debt? By voting to disconnect from the Elburn Fire Department, you’d essentially be taking on this burden. Over time, your hard-earned tax dollars will inevitably be required to settle this debt, along with funding the increased personnel and equipment needed to serve you and your family.
While Fox River continues to accumulate debt since its creation, the Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District operates without any debt, hidden expenses, or new taxation. Their financial strategy simply makes more sense.
Let the facts guide your decision, and ensure your voice is heard loud and clear.
**Please vote NO on November 4!**
Sincerely,
**Kelly P. Callaghan**
Fire Chief, Elburn & Countryside Fire Protection District
