The Wilmette Fire Department has a rich history that stretches back to 1958, with a collection of apparatus photos now available in a dedicated gallery. This gallery can be accessed via the 'Historic Photos' button on the pages showcasing the department's stations. The images featured so far have been generously contributed by Bill Friedrich, Karl Klotz, and Larry Shapiro, along with several from Jeff Schielke’s collection.
In earlier years, the Wilmette Fire Department primarily relied on Seagrave-built apparatus. However, starting in the 1980s, the department began transitioning its fleet to include vehicles manufactured by E-ONE. Today, much like in the past, the department operates out of two stations, although the way they deploy their resources has evolved over time. Station 2, located on the west side, houses an engine and an ambulance, with a spare engine also kept there. The main headquarters station, however, is equipped with a battalion chief, an ambulance, and a tower ladder. On days when staffing levels are at full capacity, the squad will often be deployed alongside the ambulance for additional support. To ensure continuous coverage, another tower ladder remains in reserve at this station, ready to step in should maintenance or unforeseen circumstances take the primary vehicle out of service.
From the 1970s into the mid-1980s, Wilmette maintained a similar setup with two trucks on their roster. During this period, they operated a 1962 Seagrave mid-mount ladder truck and a 1975 Seagrave 55-foot Snorkel. Unfortunately, we haven't yet been able to acquire photographs of the Cadillac ambulances that were once part of their fleet.
While the transition to modern vehicles has brought significant advancements, it’s clear that the Wilmette Fire Department continues to uphold its tradition of excellence and reliability. Their commitment to serving the community remains unwavering, as evidenced by their careful planning and strategic deployment of resources. This dedication ensures that Wilmette remains prepared to handle emergencies effectively, no matter the situation. As new technologies emerge, it will be fascinating to see how the department continues to evolve while preserving its storied past.
