The Wilmette Fire Department has a rich history that dates back to the late 1950s, with a collection of vintage apparatus photos now available for viewing through the 'Historic Photos' button on the pages dedicated to the department's stations. These images have been generously provided by Bill Friedrich, Karl Klotz, Larry Shapiro, and several others from Jeff Schielke’s collection. Back in the day, the Wilmette Fire Department primarily relied on Seagrave-built vehicles. However, starting in the early 1980s, the department began transitioning its fleet to include units manufactured by E-ONE. This shift marked a significant change in the department's operational capabilities while maintaining their commitment to excellence. Today, as in the past, the Wilmette Fire Department operates out of two stations, though the way they deploy their resources has evolved over time. Station 2, located on the west side, houses an engine and an ambulance, serving as the primary response unit. Additionally, it keeps a spare engine in reserve. Meanwhile, the headquarters station, Station 1, includes a battalion chief, an ambulance, and a tower ladder. On days when all personnel are present, the squad may also be deployed alongside the ambulance to enhance coverage. Another tower ladder remains in reserve here, ensuring uninterrupted service even during routine maintenance or unexpected equipment issues. Throughout much of the 1970s and into the mid-1980s, Wilmette maintained a similar setup with two trucks—a 1962 Seagrave mid-mount ladder truck and a 1975 Seagrave 55-foot Snorkel. Unfortunately, we currently lack photographs of the earlier Cadillac ambulances that were once part of the fleet. Despite these gaps in our photographic record, the current configuration continues to serve the community effectively. The integration of modern E-ONE vehicles alongside traditional designs ensures that Wilmette firefighters remain prepared to handle any emergency situation efficiently. Their dedication to preserving both tradition and innovation makes them a model for other departments across the country.
