On November 10, 2014, around 11:05 AM, the West Chicago Fire Protection District received a call about a house fire at 28w649 Hickory Lane. The first responding unit, Battalion 6, reported visible smoke coming from the house upon arrival.
When I got there, flames were already visible venting out of the second floor near the mansard roofline. The structure was a two-story wooden building, roughly 50 by 50 feet, with a full mansard-style roof that extended from the second floor down to about three feet above the ground.
Firefighters quickly entered through the front door, but within minutes, the fire had spread downward into the mansard area. There was significant fire around the entryway, prompting Command to order all interior crews out. An exterior firefighting approach was initiated instead. As teams worked to pull apart and open sections of the mansard roof, it became clear that the fire was spreading faster than anticipated, traveling along the east and south sides of the house. It was incredibly challenging to stay ahead of the blaze as it seemed to appear ahead of our efforts whenever we opened up new areas.
It took approximately 45 minutes to bring the situation under control. Later reports suggested that someone had been working on sweating pipes inside the first floor of the home, which might have contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Overall, it was a tough situation, and the firefighters did an amazing job given the circumstances. I'll add more details and maybe even a video if I can get my hands on one. Stay tuned for updates!
