It was a busy morning for local fire departments when an unfortunate collision unfolded on Route 41 yesterday. Just north of Route 176 in the northbound lanes, an over-the-road tractor-trailer smashed into the back of another semi-truck. The incident happened practically right in front of the Knollwood Fire Station, and it seems the driver of the trailing truck simply didn’t notice the vehicle ahead slowing down. Thankfully, the driver of the first truck walked away unscathed, but the operator of the second truck wasn't so lucky—trapped inside their crushed cab for nearly an hour.
Emergency responders from multiple departments sprang into action, including teams from Knollwood, Lake Bluff, North Chicago, and even the Great Lakes Naval Training Center Fire Department. Together, they worked tirelessly to free the trapped man. Among those lending a hand was the Lake Bluff Squad 520, affectionately known as "the Guardian," which provided essential tools needed for the rescue effort.
One particularly striking moment came when firefighters used a saw to carefully cut through the rear wall of the truck’s cab, gaining precious access to the injured driver. Another critical phase involved attaching a chain to the engine block of the truck to create leverage, allowing them to pull the dashboard away from the trapped individual. Throughout this ordeal, the firefighters remained calm and determined, ensuring every effort was made to save the day.
Local photographer Tim Olk captured these intense moments, offering a glimpse into the skill and teamwork required during such emergencies. As the hours passed, the situation became increasingly manageable once the obstructing truck was finally moved aside, giving rescuers much-needed space to operate. Ultimately, the driver was successfully freed and quickly transported to Condell Hospital by paramedics from Lake Forest.
