Late on Sunday evening, December 30th, 2018, the Roberts Park Fire Protection District received a call about a fire in a third-floor apartment located at 8701 West 85th Place. As the situation escalated, it was ultimately classified as a four-alarm fire. This intense blaze completely gutted the top floor of the building and inflicted significant damage on both the first and second floors.
The fire occurred in the final section of a row of three connected buildings, each separated by firewalls. Although flames did manage to spread to one unit in an adjacent building, firefighters were able to prevent further damage, saving the majority of the adjoining structure as well as the end building. To combat the fire, elevated master streams were deployed from trucks belonging to Bedford Park, Pleasantview, and Evergreen Park, positioned on two sides of the burning building. These streams operated for several hours alongside multiple large hoses from the ground and deck guns provided by Roberts Park and Bridgeview engines.
An incomplete roster of the firefighting agencies present at the scene included Roberts Park, Bridgeview, Lemont, North Palos, Lyons, Palos Heights, Crestwood, Orland, Pleasantview, Alsip, Evergreen Park, Bedford Park, Central Stickney, Chicago Ridge, Summit, Oak Lawn, and Chicago.
Attached are images captured by Larry Shapiro, showcasing the impressive efforts of the Bedford Park FD Tower 709 Pierce Dash CF aluminum tower ladder and a Seagrave Marauder fire engine at the site. Below these photos is a gallery of additional snapshots from the incident, offering a glimpse into the scale and intensity of the fire-fighting operation.
