Late on Sunday evening, December 30th, 2018, the Roberts Park Fire Protection District responded to reports of a fire at an apartment located on the third floor of a building at 8701 West 85th Place. What initially seemed like a contained incident quickly escalated into a four-alarm blaze. The intense fire completely gutted the top floor of the building while causing significant structural damage to both the first and second floors.
The fire broke out in the final section of a row of three connected buildings, each separated by firewalls. Although flames managed to spread to one unit in the adjacent building, firefighters were able to prevent further damage, saving the rest of that structure as well as the end building. Firefighting efforts involved massive resources from multiple departments. Elevated master streams were deployed from ladder trucks provided by Bedford Park, Pleasantview, and Evergreen Park, operating on two sides of the burning building for several hours. In addition to these aerial operations, numerous large hoses were laid down from the ground, and deck guns from engines dispatched by Roberts Park and Bridgeview were utilized to combat the inferno.
An incomplete roster of the firefighting units present at the scene included personnel from Roberts Park, Bridgeview, Lemont, North Palos, Lyons, Palos Heights, Crestwood, Orland, Pleasantview, Alsip, Evergreen Park, Bedford Park, Central Stickney, Chicago Ridge, Summit, Oak Lawn, and Chicago.
Attached are images captured by Larry Shapiro, showcasing the heroic efforts of the firefighters. One photograph highlights a Bedford Park FD Tower 709 Pierce Dash CF aluminum tower ladder battling the flames, while another captures a Seagrave Marauder fire engine at the scene. Further visual documentation is available through a gallery of additional photos, offering a glimpse into the scale and intensity of the operation.
As of now, the full extent of the damage is being assessed, but it’s clear that the rapid response and coordinated efforts of multiple fire departments played a crucial role in preventing further destruction. The community remains hopeful for a swift recovery for those affected by this devastating fire.
