Last Monday, August 9, 2021, tragedy struck the Chicago Fire Department when CFD FF/PM Chris Wheatley, a beloved member of Truck Company 2, tragically lost his life following an accident. Chris had fallen from a ladder while responding to a fire call at 615 W. Randolph. His passing has left an irreplaceable void within our community. Chris was laid to rest yesterday, August 13, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, following a touching Mass held at St. John Fisher Church on South Washtenaw. As I scroll through the images capturing the solemn proceedings, my heart aches with every detail. The first image shows a small yet significant token—a commemorative marking now proudly displayed on Truck 2, honoring Chris's dedication and sacrifice. It's hard not to feel emotional looking at these pictures, especially the one where the casket is carefully loaded onto Engine 5 for its journey to the church. The respect and reverence shown by everyone present are palpable. In another poignant moment, firefighters stand in solemn formation outside St. John Fisher Church, their presence a testament to the deep bonds shared within the firefighting brotherhood. Beyond the Chicago firefighters, members of the AFFI Honor Guard from several suburban departments also joined in paying their respects. Each photograph tells a story of loss but also of unity and strength in grief. The final procession from the church remains etched in memory, with fellow firefighters forming a respectful corridor along the street. It’s moments like these that remind us how much Chris meant to each of them. As I reflect on the images shared by Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro, it strikes me just how much effort goes into ensuring such occasions honor the fallen appropriately. It’s heartbreaking to think about how suddenly life can change, leaving behind families, friends, and colleagues grappling with unimaginable sorrow. Chris’s legacy will live on through those who knew him best and through the countless lives he touched during his time serving the city. May his memory continue to inspire future generations of firefighters to uphold the highest standards of courage and compassion. While words cannot fully express the depth of our loss, they serve as a reminder of the immense pride we have in having had Chris among us. Rest in peace, FF/PM Chris Wheatley—you will never be forgotten.
