Last Monday, on August 9, we lost a beloved member of the Chicago Fire Department family, FF/PM Chris Wheatley of Truck Company 2. Tragically, Chris fell from a ladder near the roof line while responding to a fire at 615 W. Randolph and later passed away from his injuries. The entire department mourned his loss, and his final journey was marked by solemn ceremonies.
Chris was laid to rest yesterday, August 13, 2010, at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Alsip, following a touching Mass held at St. John Fisher Church on South Washtenaw. The outpouring of respect and gratitude from both the Chicago Fire Department and surrounding communities was overwhelming.
As the casket was transported to the church, it was placed on Engine 5, drawing a somber procession through the streets. Firefighters and officers lined up along the route, paying their respects. Beyond the city firefighters stood representatives from the AFFI Honor Guard, symbolizing solidarity from various suburban fire departments who also cherished Chris's dedication and professionalism.
Inside St. John Fisher Church, the casket was solemnly carried in during the service, with the honor guard maintaining a dignified presence. Fire commissioners and chiefs stood at attention, saluting as the casket was brought out of the funeral home. Later, members of the department carried the casket from the church, accompanied by an emotional procession of uniformed personnel and mourners.
