Late Monday afternoon, the Countryside Fire Protection District responded to reports of a car accident at the busy intersection of Lakeview Parkway and North Fairway Drive in Vernon Hills. According to eyewitnesses, one of the vehicles involved in the collision ended up submerged in a nearby retention pond, with the driver still trapped inside the vehicle. Emergency responders quickly mobilized, dispatching divers from both the Libertyville Fire Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District to assist.
By the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the driver had managed to exit the sinking vehicle and was perched precariously on its roof. Fortunately, several bystanders came forward to help, ensuring the driver was safely brought to dry land with only minor injuries. The other driver involved in the crash also sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for evaluation.
Photographs captured by Larry Shapiro show the dramatic aftermath, with the roof and luggage rack of the SUV clearly visible in the center of the retention pond. Divers from the Libertyville Fire Department prepared to enter the water, their equipment glistening under the sun, as they readied themselves to secure the submerged vehicle. Working alongside them were members of the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District's new dive team, showcasing their latest specialized equipment.
Once the SUV was stabilized, Ernie’s Wrecker Service was called in to retrieve both vehicles from the pond. Divers carefully attached straps to the SUV to ensure it could be safely winched out of the water. The entire operation was a testament to the coordinated efforts of multiple emergency services working together to mitigate the situation.
As the drama unfolded, residents and passersby gathered around the pond, their curiosity piqued by the commotion. Firefighters diligently worked through the challenge, eventually pulling the SUV from the water. A firefighter could be seen washing off his dive gear, signaling the conclusion of a successful rescue mission.
