Monday afternoon brought an unexpected twist to the usually quiet intersection of Lakeview Parkway and North Fairway Drive in Vernon Hills. Calls started coming in to the Countryside Fire Protection District after witnesses reported a car accident where one of the vehicles had ended up in a nearby retention pond. To everyone's relief, the driver managed to exit the submerged vehicle and was found sitting on its roof when firefighters arrived. With some help from bystanders, the driver made it safely out of the water.
The Libertyville Fire Department and the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District were quick to respond, dispatching their dive teams to assist. As divers prepared to enter the water, they were joined by Ernie’s Wrecker Service, which was on-site to recover both vehicles. The divers secured straps around the SUV to ensure it could be safely winched out of the pond.
Photographer Larry Shapiro captured several images from the scene, including moments of the rescue effort and the aftermath. His photos show the SUV half-submerged in the pond, its roof barely visible above the waterline, as well as the teamwork involved in pulling the vehicle out. One image even highlights the Libertyville Dive Squad, ready and equipped for action.
In addition to the dramatic underwater recovery, Shapiro also documented the cleanup process, showing firefighters rinsing off their gear after a challenging day. Another striking image captures the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District’s new dive team unit, showcasing their state-of-the-art equipment.
Both drivers involved in the accident were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. It’s unclear what exactly caused the crash, but witnesses say it happened during rush hour, adding an extra layer of complexity to the situation. For now, the pond serves as a reminder of how quickly accidents can escalate, even in seemingly safe areas.
Shapiro also shared a brief video and additional photos from the scene, which can be viewed [here] and [here]. As the investigation continues, the community remains hopeful that lessons learned from this incident will help prevent similar occurrences in the future.
