PRESS RELEASE Prospect Heights Fire District Boosts Staffing in Response to Severe Winter Conditions Starting Saturday, January 4th at 6:00 PM, the Prospect Heights Fire District has ramped up its on-duty personnel to better handle emergency situations without relying on neighboring departments for immediate support. This increase ensures that an additional ambulance is on standby and that the district’s water tanker can be deployed to any fire, not just in areas without fire hydrants. With heavy snowfall and extreme cold, access to hydrants can become difficult, and water mains may freeze or break, rendering them unusable. Fire Chief Don Gould explained, “During deep snow, it's hard to reach hydrants, and in very cold temperatures, water lines can rupture or hydrants can freeze. The water tanker helps us respond more effectively in these conditions.†He also noted that fire engine pumps can freeze if water sits inside without being used through a hose. In such weather, extra staff are often needed for calls that don’t require the full use of the fire pump, so they are dispatched in other vehicles as required. The fire district has long had a contingency plan in place for severe weather, and this is the second time this season they’ve activated it. So far, there have been no fires or major emergencies directly linked to the current storm. However, Chief Gould urges residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they notice any issues—don’t wait, as response times are already longer due to the harsh conditions.
