Prospect Heights Fire District Boosts Staff in Response to Severe Winter Weather

Starting Saturday, January 4th at 6:00 PM, the Prospect Heights Fire District has increased its on-duty personnel to better handle emergencies without relying on help from nearby fire departments. This decision ensures that an additional ambulance is available and that the district’s water tanker can be deployed for fires across all areas, including those without fire hydrants.

Fire Chief Don Gould explained, “Heavy snowfall can make it difficult to access fire hydrants, and in extreme cold, water mains might crack or hydrants could freeze, rendering them unusable. The water tanker helps improve response times in these situations.” He also noted that in very cold weather, the pump on a fire engine may freeze if water isn’t flowing through the hoses. To address this, extra staff are now stationed in other vehicles to assist with calls that require more people but not necessarily the main fire pump.

The fire district has had this emergency staffing plan in place for years, and it's been activated regularly, especially during harsh winters. So far, there have been no fires or major incidents directly linked to the current severe weather. However, Chief Gould urges residents to call 9-1-1 immediately if they spot any issues—don’t wait, as response times are already longer due to the challenging conditions.

Palatine Fire Department needs help digging out fire hydrants

As winter continues to grip the region, local fire departments are working around the clock to ensure public safety. In Palatine, firefighters have been seen clearing snow around fire hydrants, a crucial task that allows for faster response times in case of emergencies. With temperatures dropping and snow piling up, crews are preparing for the worst while hoping for the best. Residents are being reminded to stay alert, keep emergency numbers handy, and report any concerns promptly. It’s a tough time for everyone, but thanks to the hard work of first responders, communities remain as safe as possible under the circumstances.
