By Joe Speicher, Executive Director, Autodesk Foundation This month, the devastation in Kathmandu has left many of us feeling deeply saddened and disheartened. However, the outpouring of global support has been nothing short of inspiring. The U.S. government has pledged $10 million in aid, telecommunications companies are providing free calls to Nepal, and the U.S. Air Force has sent over 100 troops to Kathmandu, including specialized urban search-and-rescue teams. As an organization, the Autodesk Foundation, along with countless others, is exploring ways to lend a hand. Technology firms are channeling their resources and expertise toward humanitarian efforts. Google and Facebook are leveraging their vast user bases to verify the safety of individuals in Nepal. Meanwhile, PayPal, with its network of over 150 million active users, is covering transaction fees and facilitating donations through its platform. We at the Autodesk Foundation believe that our expertise in design and construction holds immense potential to shape Kathmandu's rebuilding process. This is why we’re aligning ourselves with organizations that share our mission. ### The Design Opportunity After the initial emergency response phase wraps up—when supplies are distributed, temporary shelters are erected, and debris is cleared—the real challenge begins: restoring the city’s infrastructure, homes, and businesses. Unfortunately, this critical stage is frequently overlooked or mishandled. Fortunately, some of our Foundation-supported organizations have been addressing these issues for years. One standout example is Build Change, a nonprofit partner of ours with over a decade of experience constructing resilient homes and schools in disaster-stricken regions. Through collaboration with local governments, Build Change develops and enforces seismic-resistant building codes and trains local contractors to build such structures cost-effectively. Just a day after the earthquake, we received word that Build Change was mobilizing a response team in Nepal. If you agree that thoughtful design can transform lives, consider supporting this remarkable organization. ### How to Contribute Many of you have reached out asking how you can make a meaningful difference. Here are some actionable steps: 1. **Donate to Build Change**: We firmly believe this is one of the most impactful contributions you can make toward long-term change in Nepal. 2. **Support Creative Market**: For the month of May, nearly 500 Creative Market shops are donating up to 100% of their earnings to Nepal disaster relief. Thanks to the Autodesk Foundation’s matching pledge of the first $20,000, all funds will go directly to All Hands, a nonprofit focused on both immediate and ongoing community assistance. Learn more on Creative Market’s blog. 3. **Participate in the Pixlr Challenge**: This month, Pixlr is donating $20,000 to Build Change. Their recent photo-sharing challenge encouraged users to post images inspired by the theme, “Message for Nepal.” Find details on the Pixlr blog. At Autodesk, we’re fully committed to aiding Nepal’s recovery—not only through partnerships like Build Change but also by encouraging our employees to volunteer and contribute. Natural disasters will remain a reality for generations to come, but together, we can build a safer, more resilient future for everyone. --- This crisis has highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation. As individuals, communities, and global citizens, we have the power to create lasting change. Let’s continue to stand united and ensure that Nepal emerges stronger than ever.
