Recently, Fire Chief Magazine reported that several manufacturers of fire apparatus are conducting recalls on specific models. Here's a summary of the affected vehicles:

  • Pierce is recalling 724 trucks. The recall includes model years 2007 to 2011 for the Arrow XT, model years 2008 to 2011 for the Custom Contender, Impel, Quantum, and model years 2009 to 2011 for the Saber and Velocity.
  • E-ONE has issued a recall for certain model years 2008 through 2011 Cyclone II, Typhoon, and Quest vehicles, which were manufactured between May 1, 2008, and November 28, 2011.
  • Ferrara is recalling 104 model years 2009 to 2011 Inferno and Igniter vehicles. These trucks were manufactured between April 2009 and October 2011.
  • Sutphen is recalling certain 2009 to 2012 model-year vehicles.
  • American LaFrance is recalling some model years 2010 and 2011 Eagle Fire trucks that were manufactured between October 21, 2010, and August 25, 2011.
  • HME is recalling certain 2009 to 2012 model-year fire trucks manufactured between January 16, 2009, and November 1, 2011.

Summary:
MERITOR WABCO is recalling certain electronic stability control (ESC) modules with part numbers 446 065 020 0, 400 850 179 0, 400 850 195 0, 446 065 027 0, and 400 850 185 0, shipped to various North American vehicle manufacturers from August 2005 through September 2011. Under specific road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination characteristics may adversely affect the slip angle calculation of the electronic stability control (ESC) system. This might cause the ESC to perceive an oversteering situation and apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle until the vehicle is perceived to be stable.
Consequence:
If the driver is slow to react during this ESC intervention, the vehicle may deviate from its intended line of travel, increasing the risk of a crash.
Remedy:
MERITOR WABCO is working with the vehicle manufacturers to identify and notify vehicle owners of the recall. Owners may contact Meritor WABCO at 1-248-435-8001 or their vehicle manufacturer.
