In addition to these recalls, Meritor Wabco Vehicle Control Systems has announced a separate recall involving electronic stability control (ESC) modules. The affected parts have part numbers 446 065 020 0, 400 850 179 0, 400 850 195 0, 446 065 027 0, and 400 850 185 0. These modules were shipped to various North American vehicle manufacturers from August 2005 through September 2011. Under specific road and driving conditions, vehicle body roll and road inclination characteristics may interfere with the slip angle calculation of the ESC system. This could cause the system to mistakenly perceive an over-steering situation and apply the outer wheel brake on the front axle until the vehicle is perceived as stable.
If the driver does not react quickly during this ESC intervention, the vehicle might deviate from its intended path, increasing the risk of a crash. Meritor Wabco is collaborating with vehicle manufacturers to identify and notify affected owners. Vehicle owners can contact Meritor Wabco at 1-248-435-8001 or their respective vehicle manufacturer for further details. Additionally, owners can reach out to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153) or visit http://www.safercar.gov for more information.
This recall highlights the importance of regular maintenance and updates for critical safety systems in vehicles. It also underscores the need for vigilance on the part of both manufacturers and users to ensure that all components function correctly under various conditions. If you own one of the affected vehicles or have concerns about your ESC system, it's advisable to consult with a professional technician or contact the appropriate manufacturer immediately.
