Just added to our website is another division within MABAS Division 12. The Oak Brook Terrace Fire District serves a 2.5-square-mile area from a single fire station. Their team consists of both full-time and part-time firefighters, ensuring efficient coverage of their jurisdiction. This station houses quite a diverse fleet of vehicles. They currently operate two engines, a tower ladder, two ambulances, a TRT trailer, and even a pickup truck. Recently, they introduced a brand-new Spartan/Marion engine into service, marking a shift from their traditional white-over-red color scheme to black-over-red. Their existing equipment includes an E-ONE tower ladder and two Medtec-built ambulances.
Chicago holds a special place in firefighting history, particularly as the origin of the Snorkel’s use in the fire service. The entire Chicago metropolitan area was once a hub for these aerial platforms, available in various lengths and configurations. Before acquiring their current E-ONE 95-foot tower ladder in 1991, this department used an unconventional 85-foot Snorkel mounted on a conventional GMC 7000 chassis. This particular vehicle stood out because it wasn't built on a Ford C-Series chassis, an International cab-over, or a custom fire truck chassis like most others.
Their headquarters station, housed in a building that exudes classic charm, serves as the heart of operations. A recent photograph captures its essence beautifully, thanks to Larry Shapiro's keen eye. Adjacent to the station sits one of their E-ONE engines, a testament to modern firefighting technology. Looking back at their past, we find an interesting piece of history—a 1964, 85-foot Pitman Snorkel. Previously stationed at their older facility, this rig featured a Pierce-built body mounted on a GMC 7000 chassis with a V-12 engine. Nicknamed Snorkel 86 at the time, it boasted a 1,000-gallon-per-minute pump and carried 200 gallons of water. This relic from the past is now part of Larry Shapiro's extensive collection, offering a glimpse into how far the department has come since those early days.
