At around 4:30 AM, the Schaumburg Fire Department received an emergency call about a house fire. According to initial reports, the homeowner had left something unattended on the stove, which eventually caught fire. The blaze spread rapidly, and one resident who managed to escape had to wake up a neighbor to alert the fire department. When the first responders arrived at 808 Holyoke Court, they were greeted by thick smoke billowing out of the front door of the split-level house. The smoke was so dense that it filled the cul-de-sac, making visibility difficult for the firefighters as they positioned their engine in front of the burning structure. The situation escalated quickly. Firefighters reported involvement of the entire first floor shortly after arriving, prompting the incident commander to upgrade the response to a MABAS Box Alarm within minutes. The rear of the house was fully engulfed in flames, which then spread to the second floor and even the attic. The cold temperatures that morning, hovering around the mid-20s Fahrenheit, caused water from the firefighting efforts to freeze on the ground, adding another layer of challenge for the crews. Access to the building proved difficult due to the rapid spread of the fire, particularly when the stairway began to burn through. This necessitated the deployment of nearly a dozen ground ladders around the house. Initially, firefighters had to operate from these ladders to access the attic fire, pulling down ceilings for entry. It wasn't long before they could move inside the second floor and continue their efforts from there. Multiple hand lines were deployed from every side of the house to combat the spreading flames effectively. The limited access in the cul-de-sac complicated matters further. As seen in the accompanying photos, ground ladders were placed at all second-floor windows and at the corners of the roof for both access and safe egress. Despite the challenges, both residents escaped unharmed, though sadly, a pet dog did not survive the fire. The extreme cold also meant that any water used during the firefighting process froze quickly, creating slippery conditions for the firefighters. Larry Shapiro, who arrived approximately 30 minutes into the alarm, captured several photos and a video of the event. His comprehensive photo gallery, showcasing various angles and stages of the fire, is available here. Mutual aid support came from nearby departments, including trucks from Hoffman Estates and Elk Grove Village, engines from Streamwood and Hanover Park, ambulances from Elk Grove Township, Palatine Rural, and Prospect Heights, along with chief officers from Itasca and Hoffman Estates. Their coordinated efforts played a crucial role in containing the fire and ensuring public safety.
