This past Saturday, the Technology Center of DuPage (TCD), where I volunteer to teach fire science to high school students, held its annual expo. It was a big event, and the students got to participate in a mock car crash scenario right in the parking lot. The Addison Fire Protection District was there to help out, making it feel super realistic. Now, here’s the interesting part—last year, the Wood Dale Fire Department generously donated two vehicles to TCD. One of them is an older model Pierce Dash from the '80s, and the other is a classic Ford/Wheeled Coach ambulance. Both of these rigs have now been repainted with TCD’s colors, but they’ve kept a little nod to their original department with some special lettering. The Pierce Dash is particularly awesome because it’s such a piece of history. It’s like stepping back in time when you see it sitting there. And the ambulance? Well, it’s perfect for practicing extrication techniques. Seeing the students work together during the mock scenarios was inspiring—they were so focused and eager to learn.
